Spend money in Wadebridge, keep the High Street strong, and help build the Community Fund!

Since 2012, Wadebridge has had its own local currency – the Wren (Wr). We currently have notes in 2 denominations, Wr25 and Wr5.

The beauty of using this currency is that for every Wren redeemed, a percentage is put back into the Community Fund. Many shop keepers and businesses in Wadebridge have kindly agreed to donate 10% of the Wrens they receive, so for every Wr25 redeemed, £2.50 will go directly in to the Community Fund. This fund is then used to benefit the local projects, so money spent in Wadebridge stays in Wadebridge. And because Wrens can only be spent with local, independent traders, they benefit the local economy rather than see profits disappear up country.

Initially introduced as an incentive for various low carbon schemes affiliated to WREN, the currency is now available from the Energy Shop where anyone can purchase Wrens and use them in participating businesses. If you are run a business which could use Wrens, contact us at the Energy Shop to find out more.

Dominic Walford, President of the Wadebridge and District Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Chamber is fully behind this exciting initiative in our move towards becoming a low carbon town. It is another way in which we are making sure that the centre of Wadebridge thrives, whatever problems there are in the wider economy.”

The image featured on the front of the original Wr25 note is "The Wren Sings" by local artist Elizabeth-Jane Grose, while the reverse side bears a drawing of Wadebridge's eponymous bridge.

In July 2014, a new Wr5 denomination note was introduced, designed by local schoolchildren Izzy Gregson and Maisy New. The serial number of '1' of each note was presented to the Wadebridge Museum. Click here for our news item at the time.
